Overview

Japanese drama was influenced a lot by its Chinese counterparts.

There are 3 types of traditional theater in Japan and these are:

  • Noh and Kyogen Theater - Noh is a form of musical drama which aim is to entertain the upperclass society. Kyogen is an intermission which links Noh plays theme with the real world.
  • Kabuki - combines drama, dance and music.Its purpose is to instruct lower society about the loyalty with the government. Kabuki theater is very lively and it is the most well-known Japanese theater around the world.
  • Bunraku - uses puppets which are 3-4 feet tall and are controlled by puppeteers who dressed completely in black. Bunraku also uses music that can express different emotions.
